I have switched my geyser off completely and do not use electricity for hot water at all. I use lights and power only when necessary and then very sparingly. My consumption has not dropped at all according to my monthly accounts. How is the 10% drop in usage that is required measured and is it accurate? There are many stories like mine, one has only to listen to the radio, this proves that

I have put my 2 geysers on a time switch. They are only on 4 times a day @ 40 minutes each. I lowered my temperature for my geysers to just over 50 degrees.

My total savings is 44,4 % per month since I did that. I save more than R500 every month.

The Time switches was installed by an electrician, costs R1200 for 2.

After reading Peter’s great suggestion on how to make saving electricity fun for the whole family I was again reminded of the conflicting information I keep reading and hearing regarding the usefulness of switching off one’s geyser as a power saving solution. So I set out to resolve the issue once and for all: Can switching off your geyser save electricity or not?
